I thought I was paying attention to the latest developments in data portability and messaging, but Skydeck is one I missed (thanks Mashable for bringing it to my attention). These guys are taking personal cellphone call records (one of the personal data silos I mentioned back in December as a target for portability) and turning them into a self-updating social networking tool. As the Mashable piece so aptly summarizes it:
“…the emergence of the true, all-encompassing social network will come as a result of combined data sets that look at various social activity we’re all already a part of.”
Skydeck’s recent move to integrate data from other social networks via API is a great move in this direction, and the cellphone is the natural anchor for the social graph of anyone under the age of 40. This is a company to watch.
